As far back as the 15th century Portuguese Maritime Traders reported the use of
bracelet shaped Copper known as “Manillas” that were prized possessions among
They were used for centuries--As late as the mid Twentieth Century-
-As ornaments, currency and sources of metal for casting by local artisans in
Southeastern Nigeria and Benin.
Earlier use of Manillas goes further back in time, although their origins are
unclear. Various accounts attribute the earliest versions to ancient Phoenician,
Celtic, Carthaginian or Egyptian Ornaments.
Over the centuries that followed many
different types were manufactured by every European country that was engaged in
trade with West Africa. Ships laden with Manillas would find them to be readily
accepted in trade for the area’s ivory, timber, slaves, cloth and palm oil. The
Copper metal content, sizes and shapes varied over time as the style preferences
and thus market values fluctuated for the various types.
These Manilla Bracelets are thought to have been manufactured in France or
England somewhere during the 18th or 19th Century.
